Erratics
This series is named after glacial erratics — boulders left behind by melting glaciers. These epoxy sculptures are made of liquid, pigmented epoxy. Kal Mansur creates a mold which he uses to form various components. These individual elements are then melded to form a single, hollow object.
Knapped series
This new body of work, called the Knapped series, are solid epoxy sculptures. Knapping was a process by which prehistoric peoples created tools by banging two stones together, carving away certain sections to reveal sharp edges.
I wanted to create a piece of art that was a tool -- a tool for beauty, for solidity, and objectiveness.
I take liquid pigmented epoxy and pour it into a mold. After it solidifies I carve away sections which reveal a “knapped” or stepped sculpture. Straight lines are imposed on amorphous pours. The “knapping” of the slab results in a seemingly organic object being machined by the human hand.
